The registered nurses (RN) provide most of the nursing care in a healthcare setup whereas the duties of licensed practical nurses (LPN) are restricted to basic nursing only. The LPN work under the supervision of RN. The type of employment and duties which call for the requirement of a RN are mentioned below:
§ RN is responsible for drug administration, placing an intravenous (IV) drip, taking blood samples
§ Taking blood samples, performing diagnostics, and getting samples from the laboratory.
§ Handling of medical equipments
§ Having active role in finalizing patient plans
§ Performing discussion with the doctor and collaborating to improve patient care
§ Disseminating knowledge about ensuring the care of patient post-treatment, to patient and family

For a long term care facility, the role of an LPN is defined by the term basic nursing. This includes activities such as basic medical care, drug administration, specimen collection, bandage dressing, talking with patients and communicating their concerns to the doctors.

LPV/LVN collaborates with the RN in providing nursing care to the patients. The overall requirement of an LPN or LVN irrespective of the type of setup they are working in includes general care of the patient like movement, dressing, taking vital signs, providing medication and immunization as per prescription, observing drug reactions, mental health and finally providing emotional support to the patient.
