You are considering installing a photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of your one-storey home. Discuss four (4) factors that need to be taken into consideration with the installation of a PV system for providing electrical power to the home.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Amount of energy needed to power your house: It is very important to know average electricity consumption of your household to assess how many panels will be sufficient to provide the whole house with electricity.

2. The amount of direct sunlight is very crucial factor that will assess number and type of panels you should use. Of course, the main factor that impacts this is the region you live in, but tall buildings and trees can also seriously affect your panel’s sun exposure. Different panels have different reactions to shadow – some reduce the output while some shut down entirely. The more hours your panels will be exposed to full sunlight, the more efficiently energy will be produced.

3.  How do you connect to the grid: In addition to the structure and shape of your roof, you also need to consider how you are going to connect your solar power system to the grid.

4. Don’t forget about maintenance:  Installing solar panels require you to create holes in the roof. If these holes are not created or sealed properly, you will damage your roof and cause leaks. Keeping your solar panels working and your roof in good condition is all about establishing proper maintenance procedures

5. Wiring Problems: This is a job that requires you to work with electrical elements. If setup incorrectly, you can generate electricity shocks that are harmful to you and everyone around you. Always consult an electrician for any electric work.

A solar Photovoltaic (PV) system consists of a PV panel, a charger controller, a battery, and an inverter. The manufacturer of the PV system guarantees 20 years of lifetime of the entire PV system with reliability of 0.90 at the end of 20 years. The failure rate of its major components is given in Table 1. To achieve the overall system reliability goal, we can add redundant units for each subsystem (see Figure 2). Note that System A is the...

A firm is considering installing a sprinkler system to minimize damage in the event of a fire. The sprinkler system will last only 3 years. The initial cost of the system is $30,000. Thus, the firm will take a $10,000 depreciation expense for the equipment each year. Yearly maintenance is expected to be $2,000. If the firm installs the system, its insurance premium can be reduced by $5,000 each year and the losses are expected to decrease by $9,000 each...
