Nutrition have an important role in
maintaining oral health. A good diet plan improves the oral health.
Poor diet leads to gum disease and tooth decay. The tooth decay
forms because of the consumption of carbohydrates products such as
sweets, sugars,cookies, cakes, snacks with starches etc. These are
attacks the tooth enamel, breakdown occurs and forming a
cavity.
Food that impairs the oral

The carbohydrate rich foods like
candy, sweets, cake and snacks have emoty caloric value and it
adversely affects the oral health.
Foods for good oral
health
- The fiber-rich foods such as fruits
and vegetables are good for oral health. It contains fibres helps
to clean the gums.
 
- Sugarless chewing gum provides
cleanliness and hygeinic odour to the mouth.
 
- Foods with fluoride are grapes,
wine, black tea, potatoes, drinking water. These foods promote the
healthy teeth and gums.
 
Vitamins and
minerals
- Vitamin C, Iron, Vitamin D and
calcium are great for oral health.
 
- Increase the intake of these
vitamin containing foods.
 
- The calcium rich foods are fat free
milk, yogurt, cheese, almonds, dark green leafy vegetables etc. The
vitamin C rich foods are fruits, tomato, potato, cabbage, leafy
vegetables etc. Iron rich foods are red meat, seafood, beans, green
leafy vegetables, dried fruits, peas etc. Vitamin D containing
foods are mushroom, egg yolks, fatty fish and sea foods.
 
Promotion of oral
health
- Maintain oral hygeine by daily
brushing and flossing twice a day. It helps to keep the bacteria
under control and prevention of oral infections. there by the oral
health improves.
 
- Salt solution helps to kill
bacteria on the surface of the gums, teeth and throat.
