In gastrointestinal system the food that is a complex substance that can be broke into smaller simpler substance that is absorbed by the body needs is called as a digestion process.

There is a tract by which the food enters and digested and excreted from the stomach that is called gastrointestinal tract of the following parts known as the mouth to pharynx to esophagus to stomach to duodenum to jejunum to ileum to cecum to ascending colon to transverse colon to descending colon to sigmoid colon to rectum to anal canal.

The layers of gastrointestinal tract are named as the following outer layer is serosal which is made up of peritoneum, the middle layer is muscular which is formed by the smooth muscles and the inner layer is mucosal layer which is made up of areola tissue, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves.

The blood supply of gastrointestinal system are from the aorta branch named as celiac plexus and the superior, inferior mesentric arteries and it is drained by the portal vein. The nerve supply is by the enteric nerves namely myenteric plexus of auerbach, submucus plexus of meissner.

The organs and glands in this system are salivary gland, liver, stomach, gall bladder and pancreas. The main function of gastrointestinal intestinal system are as explained. The secretion of digestive juices is one of the major function of gastrointestinal system which are named as hydrochloric acid that is secreted by the stomach and bile juice that is secreted from the liver and some other digestive juices secreted from the salivary glands, pancreas and also from intestine.
