Health problem of choice: Osteoporosis

Introduction-

In US and all other developed countries, osteoporosis seems to be a prevalent disease among the elderly population. This have a bad impact on the quality of life of these people. Most of the times osteoporosis is underdiagnosed or undertreated in the elderly. Also, these elderly people suffer with multiple co- morbid conditions which makes them the high-risk group. Osteoporosis causes reduced bone mass and deformed bone architecture; which ultimately increases the risk of fracture.

Effect of osteoporosis among elderly

It has been observed that around 24% of patients with hip fracture are aged more than 50 years, dies in the year following their fracture. Insufficient intake of dietary calcium and vitamin D are more observed in the elderly and this ultimately leads to an increased risk of fracture. However, screening and treatment of osteoporosis seems to fall for short due to the presence of co-morbid conditions among the elderly. Urgent action is required to maintain and improve the quality of life of the elderly.
