Briefly explain what it means to “encode” a health communication message. Describe it in almost a page
Encoding is one of the elements of process of communication. In which communicator prepare an information( thoughts or ideas) and translate it into meaningful language. Meaningfull language can be in the form of verbal and non verbal. Verbal means , thoughts and ideas are translated to others by using written or oral language. Non- verbal means conveying the message through symbols, like patting over the back, hand signals, facial expressions and so on. The encoder should select medium of translating the message.(direct one to one communication, records, phone, mail ).
Encoding is done by sender and the decoding is by reciever. Perception of message between these two persons should be same.
Importance of encodeing in health communication.
Clear communication process is important in health care delivery system. There are multidiciplinary personnels and their role is different in the patient care.Maintaining effective communication between these personnel and patients are important.
Meaningful translation of health care providers ideas related to patients care either in the form of written, oral or non-verbal plays an vital role in providing direct care to the patients, transfering one patient to other depatment, referring from one hospital to other.
Encoding , helps to maintain good communication between staffs. For example: The ward sister , on being happy at her staff's excellent performance, may appreciate her verbally or may simply pat over her back. Both conveys same message.
