such issues?
5. Cultural and language barriers or differences make the health care a complex issue. Modern medicine was developed into a subculture with its own history, language, codes of conduct, expectations, methods, technologies, and concerns about the science which supports it. The diversity of the human population service demands a care based on the cultural diversity.
The disparity between the biomedical categorization of human disruptions as disease and the patient's personal and social experience of illness is determined by the cultural and ethnic differences. The identification and management of perspectives of illness in different situations are important in an attempt to develop plans for solving them. While determining the nature of a patient's problems and describing solutions, the biomedicine must use approaches that recognize and account for the views and values of the individual and of cultures, not only in determining the nature of a patient's problems but also in describing solutions. In order to be efficient in diverse situations, the health care personnel must be ready to adjust to the dictates of biology and understand the perception of illness by the patient, his family, and community.
The development of dissatisfaction occurs if the healthcare provider fails to understand the health and disease perspectives based on the patient's culture and beliefs. The provider-patient communication involves socialization, diagnostic inquiry, planning, negotiation, goal setting, therapy, and education for an effective management plan. The effective communication contributes to the value of the information being shared, its basic meaning and content. The views of reality are affected by the cultural boundaries and inadequate knowledge culture is the major source of discrepant views of reality.
Example:
The communication with cancer patients can be a challenging aspect of care for a healthcare provider. The communication in a multicultural situation is more complicated to both the patient and the provider. The patient’s perception of health-related values, beliefs, and behaviours are shaped based on the culture and without proper consideration of the former care will be inappropriate. The effective health communication based on cultural diversity can affect patients and communities approach to diagnosis and treatment of cancer and their trust towards healthcare providers and institutions.
The African's usually preferred traditional healers to the western medicine. The late presentation of cancer patients is due to the same reason and which makes the treatment further complicated and outcome worse. They also consult with family members and the elders in the community while taking treatment decisions. The effective therapeutic communication to obtain the confidence of the traditional practitioners and elders in the community can help in ensuring early detection and treatment of cancer.
