The Human Genome Project has provided humankind with new information about genetic influences on behavior Do you support this research? Or do you think the research is unethical? Why?
How do you think this issue can help or hurt development in humans?

Expert Solution

#.Human Genome Project- A collaborative project that involved scientists from all across the world to find every human gene. I support this project and according to me it will help in the development of humans because it has many benefits in the field of medicine and other vital departments .

3 benefits in predicting and preventing diseases:-

individually tailored advice on the best diet and lifestyle to avoid likely problems can be given by doctors. Doctors can check us regularly to ensure early treatment if we do develop diseases that we are susceptible to. Cures could be found for found for genetic diseases such as sickle cell anaemia

Benefits in the development of new and better medicines :-

it is a future possibility that there will be individually tailored medicines based on the way our individual bodies will react to the diseases and the possible treatments. More effective treatments can be designed by knowing how a disease affects us on a molecular level

Benefits in accurate diagnosis :-

some diseases are difficult to test for (e.g you can only tell that someone had Alzheimer's after they die) but if you know the genetic cause accurate testing will be a lot easier.

Benefits in improvements in forensic science :-

a 'DNA fingerprint' can be produced by forensic scientists from biological material found at a crime scene if it matches a suspects DNA you know that they were certainly there. In the future it may even be possible to know what a suspect looks like from DNA found at a scene.

Genetic variation is the difference in DNA sequences between individuals within a population. The human genome has about 3 × 109 base pairs of DNA, and between any two humans, the amount of genetic variation is about 0.1%. In other words, about 1 bp in every 1,000 bp of DNA will be different between two random individuals. Any two individuals have about 6 × 106 base pairs that are different. Therefore, we can say that there is considerable genetic variation...

The Human Genome Project (HGP) is an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the sequence of nucleotide base pairs which make up human DNA, and of identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and a functional standpoint. Some people advocate the use of this knowledge to ultimately develop gene therapy. The goal of gene therapy would be to find alleles that are “faulty” and to correct them with normal...
