As the person ages , the elasticity of the skin decreases and the oil production reduces which causes dry flaky skin making it prone for skin ulcers if there is restricted movement.

Along with skin there are other sensory impairments like visual impairment, hearing loss, smell and taste impairment are also associated.

Nursing interventions for an older adult with limited physical functions :

  • Frequent mobility and change in position prevents sore on the skin.
  • Apply moisturizer inorder to prevent dryness , itchy and flaky skin.
  • Use of watered gloves at a place of joints if keeping the position still for sometime as it prevents soreness in the joints.
  • Use of air mattress to prevent pressure ulcers.
  • Frequent neurological assessment by checking the reflexes for checking on neurological impairment.
  • Make house fall proof by not using slippery tiles, placing handle bars , well ventilated and lighted house.
  • Use of walking assisted aids like walking sticks which provides support and preventing fall.
  • Hearing aids , removal of cataract by surgery brings in quality of life in geriatric patients.

Thank you.
