  • Abdominal examination had been done by assessing fundal level, position & presentation of the fetus & ausculting the fetal heart sound.

  • Monitored the progress of labor during 1st stage & provided nutrition.
  • Assisted for the 2nd stage of labor.

KNOWLEDGE GAINED:-

Clinical learning is pivotal for nursing education.

  • After experiencing the obstetrics ward gained a different level of knowledge about communication skill with a pregnant woman & her family
  • Gained knowledge about vital signs , history & other physical assessment of a pregnant woman which are completely different from the other patients.
  • Specially gained knowledge from theP/V examination which is totally new for a nursing student.
  • Assisting during the stages of labor & experienced a very new kind of knowledge about child birth
  • By providing immediate care of new born , gained the knowledge about the care of new born.

ATTITUDE DEVELOPED:-

Caring:- After giving the care of antenatal mother & new born baby the caring nature is developed.

Compassionate:- After experiencing how much pain has been suffered by the pregnant woman during delivery made me a little bit more compassionate for the woman & baby too.

Effective communication:- Communication technique was improved greatly to keep calm the antenatal woman & her worried family.

Sense of duty & obligation:- After experiencing a child birth the sense of duty & obligation was increased for the mother & the newborn for their better new healthy life .So recorded a reported has been done properly.

Collaboration with the patient & other health care members:- This is very much important mostly in obstetrics ward without cooperation nothing is possible in this ward because every part needs to done by different type of health care workers from antenatal care to upto new born care, So collaboration is the way of effective care.

AREAS OF STRENGTH

  • Communication :- It's the most important strength to make the proper nurse- patient relationship.
  • Empathy & compassion:- That is the another area of strength foa a nursing student posted in a OB ward. This profession is mainly possessing empathy & compassion to others, specially for the patient & the associate family members.
  • Reliability & Flexibility:- It is an essential area of strength necessary for this OB ward because there are so many different types of scheduled work in this ward & which should be on time, otherwise big issues may occur .So this is the most essential strength foa a student nurse to be reliable & flexible in this OB ward.
  • Honesty & truthfulness:- The student nurse needs to be honest & truthful for the betterment of the patient & newborn & to make a trustworthy relationship with patient & family members.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT

Continuing education:- The student nurse should continue the education of obstetrics to gain more knowledge & to gain knowledge beyond the clinical field

Internal audits:- It is mainly the mantra that one can't fix what he can measure and while obstetric unit usually keep track of such things, Admission to the NICU ,it is rare that data are kept on other extremely important information & a student nurse should be aware about that.

Safety checklist:- It is mainly for the best practice during obstetrical emergencies. This should be kept in Nursing station as well as labor room to provide superior care for the emergency patients.

Complete documentation:- It is the very important thing in this ward, most of the lawsuits are lost because of poor documentation. So appropriate documentation is needed regarding mother & newborn after birth of child.

PLAN FOR SUCCESS

There should be a good planning before going the obstetrics ward to gain success.

  1. Good communication skill
  2. Good rapport establishment with the antenatal mother
  3. Showing empathy & proper antenatal care
  4. Effective antenatal assessment to avoid any risk during delivery
  5. Mental & physical support to the pregnant woman & her family members before as well as during delivery.
  6. To maintain safety checklist
  7. Receive the newborn & his care
  8. Proper documentation & recording after child birth
  9. Give a health talk to the mother after delivery regarding post natal care
  10. Make sure about the follow up check up of the mother & new born as well

This plan should be made for the success in OB clinical.
