It is a seven character alphanumeric code begins with a letter followed by two numbers. The first three characters of the ICD -10 are category which describes the general type of injury or disease.This category is followed by a decimal point and subcategorywhich is followed by two subclassifications explaing the cause,manifestation,location,severity and type of injury or disease. The last character is extension describing the tpye of encounter.
