The great migration , sometimes it is known as the GREAT NORTHWARD MIGRATION or the BLACK MIGRATION , that was the movement of 6 million Africans Americans out of the   rural southern United States to the urban Northeast , Midwest and West that occurs between the 1916 and 1970 . It was caused primarily by the  poor economic conditions as well as the prevalent of the racial segregation and discrimination in the southern states where Jim crows laws were uphelded .. In the every U.S census that prior to 1910 that more than the 90% of the African American population lived in the American south. In 1900 , only one fifth of African American living in the south were living in the Urban areas . By the end of the great Migration that just over 50% of the African American population remained in the south while a little less than 50% lived in the North and west and the African American population that had become highly urbanized . By the 1960 , of these African American that still living in the south and half now lived in the urban areas and that by 1970 , more than the 80% of African and American nationwide lived in cities

The primary factor for teh migration among southern African American were segregation , an increase in the spread of teh racist ideology that widespread lynching that is to be nearly 3500 African American s were lyncing between 1882 and 1968 and that the lack of social and economic opportunities in the south . There were also the factors that pulled migrants to the north that such as labor shortages in the northern factories that brought about world War I that resulting in thousand s of jobs in steel mills and railroads and also in meatpacking plants as well as automobile industry . The pull of jobs in the north was strengthened by the efforts of labor agents that sent by northern businessmen to recruit southern workers . The northern companies offered special incentives to encourage the black workers to relocate and including free transportation and low cost housing for them .

The Great migration that drained of much of the rural black population of the south and for a time , that froze or reduced African American population growth in parts of the region , In the number of the states there were decades of black population that declines especially across the deep south called black belt where the cotton had been king . The migration changed the demographics of the south . In 1910 The African American constituted the majority of the population of the south carolina and Mississippi and more than 40 % in Georgia , Alabama , Louisiana and Texas by the 1970 only in the Mississippi did the african American population constitute more than 30% of the state 's total . The disappearance of teh black belt was one of the striking effects of the Great migration
