What should healthcare Providers keep in mind when working with patients with this mental illness? (Anxiety Disorder)
Anxiety Disorder is a type of mental health disorder characterized by some extreme state of worry, anxiety or fear that interfere hardly with a person’s daily activities. It includes panic attacks, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific type of phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. The following are the things, healthcare Providers keep in mind when working with patients with anxiety disorders
*Proper assessment and screening: Should do proper assessment and should be addressed as early as possible. Proper mental status assessment should be done with proper techniques. Use screening tools also to assess severity of anxiety
*Check for suicide ideation, thoughts: Always monitor the patient for any suicide ideation/thoughts. Don’t leave the patient alone. Always make them feels comfortable in the existing environment
*Avoid keeping certain objects near patients: Try to avoid keeping sharp objects which can help patients to make self-harm /harm to others
*Medications: Make sure that patient consume medication properly. Identify the need for change in dose when needed. Avoid unnecessary interventions
*Proper health education of family: Proper health education should be given to family members to avoid stigmatization. It can helps to get their cooperation in improving the patient’s condition
*Relaxation techniques: Management only with pharmacological interventions can’t helps to improve the patient’s status. Relaxation techniques such as abdominal breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, meditation etc., should be incorporated in patient’s treatment plan
*Help in improving self-esteem of patients: People with anxiety disorder mostly presents with low self-esteem and low confidence. Addressing it will helps in good prognosis.
*Social isolation should be addressed: Prevent social isolation. Include patient in activities.
*Cognitive and behavioral therapy: It helps to change thinking and beliefs that are associated with anxiety. It helps to avoid unwanted thinking’s
