Introduction to ethical concepts.
Introduce yourself and let the class know what experience you have with ethics, either professionally, academically, or personally. After reading about the ethical theories we will be covering in this course, choose one that you think might best fit your current ethical position. My current position is CNA
Ethics and moral code in any line of work is very important because it makes the institution or any business work smoothly. My experience with ethics was personal is when I got injured and went to a Hospital to get myself checked. The staff was well attentive and equipped to let me know which Doctor should I see to get myself checked. As I was hurt in the leg, They even offered me a wheelchair but I denied as There was no issue in walking. So I met the doctor and he quickly started interacting with me asking about my job and few other things which helped me in conversing a little better with the doctor. He then sent me to get an x-ray and quickly diagnosed that it was nothing serious and gave me medicines and advised me to take some rest and not walk a whole lot. This shows how the nurse or the Doctor and even the lab individual were well versed in their work and did their job with extreme professionalism.
Certified nursing assistants are warm-hearted individuals in the healthcare industry. They are at the frontline of all medical duties. Being Unethical and Unprofessional can be disastrous for both the patient and the institution. Patients can feel neglected, experience health issues, which may lead to legal actions and various lawsuits against the institutions and healthcare workers.
So to work with professionalism and ethical code, There is a CNA code of ethics.
This code of ethics can be broken into a few core values.
1. Maintaining the health and well being of the patient: The primary focus of a nursing individual should be to provide any sort of help to the patient and ease the pain and suffering. For this, The nursing assistant should look at the patient as the patient only without judging them based on caste, religion, gender or any other criteria.
CNA's should try and talk to their patients to initiate a conversation which might be helpful for both the patient and the nurse as it may reduce any hesitation that the patient might feel while expressing their health-related issue or discomfort they might be facing.
2. Confidentiality: All health reports and other documents related to the patient might be kept secure and confidential. The confidentiality clause is necessary and mandated by all health care institutions and failing to do so might put the institution and workers in serious trouble. Never discuss it in public or with anyone who is not concerned with it. It might put the patient's health at serious risk. Also, report any data breach to the authorities which is what the code says and is also law.
3. Cooperation and coordination: All healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, and CNA's must coordinate with each other to provide better assistance to the patient which will benefit the institution and it's reputation. Never attempt any procedure which we are not trained for. Flexibility in shift and day to day routine is required. Willingness to adjust shifts accordingly is appreciated.
For me, The 1st point which is Maintaining the health and well being of the patient is one of the most important ethical value because that's what Certified nurse assistants are trained to do. We are the one's who are usually the first to interact with the patient and it is our duty to make the patient feel safe and comfortable and try to provide any sort of help and ease the pain and suffering.
