The audio of “Is there really such a thing as a trophy wife” shows the discussion among few people who talk about trophy wife. Trophy wife is one where poor attractive women marry an old rich man. Here the Inskeep ask about the phenomenon of the trophy wife. This is discussed with Vedantam who gives an explanation of this phenomenon giving reference to Mcclintock, a sociologist. Mr. Vedabtam says that the phenomenon of the trophy wife is much rare than what is usually perceived by people. The popularity of these cases may be a result of the lack of other cases getting less attention. For instance, people do not report for rich women marrying a man, or poor man marrying a rich girl, and so on. This all depends on the perception of the person who reports all this.
The discussion can be inferred by saying that the concept of the trophy wife is mostly a mere representation of our thoughts than the actual reality.
I also feel that the concept of the trophy wife is very rare and subjective. We should take into consideration the whole population and infer from it. There can be other reasons that could have contributed to the marriage and not merely because of money. As the saying goes “we cannot judge a book by its cover”, the same applies here.
