Two blocks in a system (b1 & b2) collide inelastically where b1 has a velocity (v) and a small mass (m) and b2 is stationary with a large mass (M). b2 can absorb some of the collision similar to a spring that does not recoil with a stiffness of (k). When the blocks collide they will stick together. The plane that the blocks are moving on is horizontal and frictionless.

1)Find the change in internal energy (delta U)

2)If all of the energy change is stored as potential energy of a spring that cannot recoil find the distance of compression that the spring undergoes in terms of v, m and k.

3)Now assume that during the collision the surface is hot. Shortly after the collision the blocks reach thermal equilibrium. Find (delta U) a few seconds after the collision

Given the mass of two blocks that collide, and the velocities of each block before and after the collision, be able to determine whether the collision was elastic, partially or completely inelastic, or not possible since an unnamed external force would be necessary to change the momentum, and/or kinetic energy of the system. Please explain in simplest terms and give an example using units given.

Two cars collide and stay stuck together. Determine the final velocity. The first vehicle has a mass of M1 = 2Kg and moves with a speed of 30 m/s traveling in a direction 30 degrees south of east. The other vehicle has a mass of M2 = 3Kg and moves with a speed of 50 m/s in a direction 45 degrees west of north. Express the velocities as vectors and use the relevant physical principle to solve the problem.
