How has the rise of social media affected the ability of party leaders to control their parties? In what ways has this new media made it easier to communicate with their partisans? On balance, has the new media been advantageous or disadvantageous to political parties?
Social media nowadays has a significant impact on the management of political parties by party leaders. The use of social media relates to online platforms in political activities and processes. The social media platforms utilized are Facebook, tube, Twitter, and Web-chat. The events mostly done by the political parties are; massive registration of the party members in different parts of the country, issuance of the membership cards, participation in the party nominations for the candidates in the initial stages before general elections, and popularization of the new parties Dommett et al., (2018).
The party leaders can monitor the party's progress and views via social media platforms and adopt appropriate changes in efforts to advance the party and popularize it. The adoption of the social in the management of the political parties has resulted in several merits. These include; high membership, easier communication with the party members in diverse regions, effective financing due to the party policies' clear records, and exact membership. Democratic rights of the citizens to air their political views have been enhanced via media platforms Zhuravskaya et al. (2020). Additionally, the growing parties and those newly formed in different countries should adopt social media to realize easier popularization and management by party leaders.
