Piaget theory discusses the developmental stages of children to adolescent stage and dinally to the adult stage. In the first sensorimotor stage, the child begins to recognize things and people around in the environment. The child does not have discriminating power to decipher the good and bad things in the environment.In the next preoperational stage children begins to grasp and hold things after recognizing the important things in life.In the next stage ,children begin to understand the importance of education and knowledge. After this stage children begin to understand the importance of relationships, parents and relatives in life.Then it is the stage of fertility and child bearing, finally leading to old age and death.
Many children start understanding death as early as 5-7 years of age.In young or adolescent age they realize the importance of death. They also understand the factors which can lead to accidental death like rash driving ,alcohol or drugs intake.Rollo May emphaisized on the understanding of death of loved ones,parents ,relatives and friends which is evident for the existence, appreciation and survival of person anywhere is life.
The studies of Elizabeth Kubler Ross, experimented on 200 terminally il patients who denied that they were approaching death and beleived that they will be cured.During the last stages of life, they repent for their wrong doings, and try to amend their life by speaking to priests.They feel depressed and sad of their last sayings are not fulfilled by other members of their family if they happen to remember the last words of wisdom.There is mourning, grief and sadness on the death of a beloved one in life.Grief counseling and therapy for those persons who are affected by the death of persons in the family and are not able to overcome the situation.Counselors provide therapy for the rehabilitation of such persons and children in life so they are able to cope with this situation. Further bibliography and death education is provided with counseling before the death of parents and relatives.
Kohlberg has discussed the importance of death in the story of his wife dying due to cancer. He came across a druggist sho was selling radium as the so called drug at ten times the price of manufacture of the drug. Heinz developed the attitude of stealing the drug as he was not able to afford it due to lack of money.This may lead him in jail leading to death as a penalty and punishment.
