You are growing Brassica rapa plants in the lab. A mutation is introduced into a subset of plants that impairs mitochondrial function in cells. Which of the following pathways of cellular respiration would be affected?
a. |
Glycolysis |
|
b. |
Pyruvate processing |
|
c. |
Citric acid cycle |
|
d. |
Electron transport chain |
|
e. |
B, C, and D are correct |
1st question) option e) Both b and d are correct .A plant is grown in soil depleted in magnesium and potassium ,but rich in phosphorus and available ground water ,it would lead to shortening of the growth of roots and impaired chlorophyll synthesis because potassium plays a major role in opening and closing of stomata, activating several enzymes connected with phosphorylation ,photosynthesis and respiration ,maintaining cation-anion balance in the cell etc. And Magnesium is required as magnesium pectate in the middle lamellae, ring structure of chlorophyll ,involves in the synthesis of DNA and RNA ,required for binding of ribosome unit etc.
2nd question )option b) Nitrogen and phosphorus ;sugar.Plants and fungi have a symbiotic relationship,in that fungi provide phosphorus and nitrogen because mycorrhizae helps to increase the surface area of the plant root system through hypae ,which are narrow and can spread beyond the nutrient depletion zone.Hypae are long extensions of the fungus which can allow access to phosphorus and nitrogen which are otherwise unavailable to the plants. The plants make the glucose in the leaves which are then transported to the fungus .
3rd question )option e .B,C.D are correct .A mutation in the Brassica rapa is introduced into a subset of plants that impairs mitochondrial functions in cell. The following pathways of the of cellular respiration would be affected are:-Pyruvate processing ,Citric acid cycle and Electron transport chain because pyruvate oxidation takes place in mitochondrial matrix ,Citric acid cycle also takes place in the matrix of mitochondria and Electron transport chain occur in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
