The following questions can be answered using the scientific method? Explain

a. Could the concentration of salt in the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats inhibit the growth of algae?

b. Is the horoscope a reliable way of knowing what will happen to us the next day?

Solutions

Expert Solution

If these questions are needed to be answered then there should be some experimental basis for these questions.

a. Experiment- apply certain fixed salt concentration on the test algae and observe the results.

Independent variable- inhibition of growth of algae

Dependent variable- concentration of salt

Control- a group of algae where no salt is added

Result- yes there is no growth of algae when there is high concentration of salts added to it. The algae are just destroyed after adding the salts.

b. Experiment- read your horoscope and see what is planned for the next day. Finally, see if that happens on the next day. Most probably it won't happen.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE- happening on the next day

dependent variable- horoscope

control variable- don't see the horoscope and do your own thing.

Result- everyday chores are not linked to the horsocopes i.e horoscopes does not decide day to day activities.

The scientific method allows us to pose questions, test questions, and analyze results. Ethics is always inclusive of research, as we must protect participants and be aware of appropriate methods for obtaining information. Through observation and research, we begin to understand the world around us. Consider research you have read about or been a part of: Was the scientific method followed? How? What ethical considerations are important to research?
