The scientific method allows us to pose questions, test questions, and analyze results. Ethics is always inclusive of research, as we must protect participants and be aware of appropriate methods for obtaining information.

Through observation and research, we begin to understand the world around us. Consider research you have read about or been a part of: Was the scientific method followed? How? What ethical considerations are important to research?

The researches that I have been a part of have always been scientific in nature. The scientific approach to research involves formation of a research question which explores possible problem areas and whether or not they need to be researched. After the research problem is decided upon, a hypothesis is formed which helps us compare our future result findings with a tentative statement so that we may conclude upon whether or not the two variables in question follow the tentative behaviour. After this the actual research is conducted and the data obtained is analyzed to find the results.

Important ethical considerations include-

  • Subjects should not be subjected to harm in any manner.
  • Respect should be given to the privacy of the subjects.
  • Obtaining consent of participants is important before continuing research.
  • Confidentiality should be maintained.

Economics is a science. Economists employ the scientific method to try to find answers to questions that interest them. However, unlike many sciences, it is hard or impossible to make experiments in economics. In physics, if one wants to know how gravity affects an object, one could conduct an experiment where an object is dropped and the time for object to reach the ground is measured. If wind interferes, or if the object is significantly slowed by air itself, then...
