  1. A positive charge is moving along the x-axis in the positive direction. What is the direction of the magnetic field on the y-axis?
  2. A long straight wire lies along the y-axis carrying current in the positive y direction.What is the direction of the magnetic field at x = 3m, y = 3 m?  What is the direction of the magnetic field at x = -3m, y = 3 m?
  3. A wire extends from x = - ∞ to x = 0 on the x-axis, then turns and extends from y = 0 to y = ∞ on the y-axis. The direction of the current is in the positive direction.  What is the direction of the magnetic field at x = 5 m, y = 0m?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:

The magnetic lines of force around the conductor are concentric circle. When the current is upwards, the magnetic field is ànticlockwise. When the current is downwards , the magnetic field is clockwise.

(a) When the positive charge is moving along x-axis in the positive direction, the drection of the magnetic field is out of the plane of paper in the y axis.

The current is in +ve x direction, so the magnetic field at +y axis is out of plane of paper.(out of x-y plane)

(b)

The direction of magnetic field at x=3m , y=3m is into the plane of paper.( into the x-y plane)

The direction of magnetic field at x=-3m, y=3m is out of the plane of paper( out of the x-y plane)

(c)

The point x=5m , y=0m lies on the x -axis.

The magnetic field at the point due the conductor in x axis is zero as the point is in the axis of the conductor.

The magnetic filed at the point x=5m, y=0m due to the conductor going along +y axis is into the plane of paper( into the x-y plane )
