Jeff has learned from his urologist that his kidney disease has progressed to renal failure and that he must include dialysis in his treatment plan. Because you work on the dialysis unit of the hospital, Jeff has asked you to explain how the hemodialysis machine works. He also asks if the unit is portable so that he can use it at home, if necessary. What will you tell Jeff?

Solutions

Expert Solution

With the development in science and technology, now there is portable dialysis machine as well.

Haemodialysis is basically a system used to clear blood, from toxic or indigestible materials left in body like ammonia, drugs, etc.

In this artery is connected to external tube for transfer of blood from body to dialyser system, i.e; blood when exits body it's pressure is checked, later heparin is added to blood to prevent coagulation of blood outside body, after this blood is pumped into dialyser unit in which blood flows in semipermeable tube, in solution present outside tubes in the dialyser unit, and here toxic materials present in blood moves out of it and enters the surrounding solution. After this that pure blood continue out of dialyser unit, after that it's pressure is checked, along with air trap and air detector is assembled, and at last blood is returned to body in vein.

Dialysate, also called dialysis fluid, dialysis solution or bath, is a solution of pure water, electrolytes and salts, such as bicarbonate and sodium. The purpose of dialysate is to pull toxins from the blood into the dialysate

It has been observed that some persons who suffer renal failure, again suffer renal failure within one year of the first episode. This is due, in part, to damage from the first episode. The performance of a new drug designed to prevent a second episode is to be tested for its effectiveness in preventing a second episode. In order to do this two groups of people suffering a first episode are selected. There are 75 people in the first group...

Suppose that Jeff has a US quarter and a US nickel. Jeff believes that his US quarter is more likely to land heads than his US nickel. Suppose Jeff flips his quarter 100 times and gets 51 heads, and Jeff independently flips the nickel 100 times and gets 49 heads. (a) Construct a 99% confidence interval for the difference in the proportion of times Jeff’s quarter lands heads and the proportion of times Jeff’s nickel lands heads. (b) If Jeff’s...

A 55-year-old banker has developed chronic kidney disease as a result of hypertension. His condition was discovered several years ago, when routine laboratory tests revealed elevated serum creatinine and BUN levels. Since then, he has been taking antihypertensive medications and restricting dietary sodium; he reported difficulty following the low-protein diet that was also prescribed. The patient recently visited his doctor with complaints of low urine output and reduced sensation in his hands and feet. He also reported feeling drowsy at...

In cases of renal failure, plasma (extracellular) concentrations of K+ may increase from normal levels of 4-5 mM. From what you know of the effects of increasing extracellular K+ on the membrane potential and the effects of membrane potential on the HCN channel, you would expect the increased extracellular concentration of K+ to: a. decrease heart rate b. decrease cardiac output c. depolarize the resting membrane potential in the pacemaker cells d. all of the above are correct e. only...
