In your own words, does our society hold unrealistic expectations about sexuality and aging? Explain.
In my opinion, I do believe that society holds an unrealistic expectation with respect to sexuality and aging. A decline in sexual arousal and activity is a natural consequence of aging. However, there is a tendency to place emphasis on sustained sexual activity over the course of one’s life with a romantic partner, in the absence of which, the strength of the relationship is put into question. There is also talk about how the elderly can have an active sex love, only if they desire to do so.
Although I do not dismiss these statements completely, I do feel they need to be scrutinised. With such predominant social beliefs such as these, an individual is bound to question himself or herself when he or she is not able to measure up to these expectations. In fact, this can also drive the individual to compulsively seek medication or methods that would provide a boost to his/her sexual activity.
