The physical places such as buildings, communities, regions, and neighborhoods all affect the mental and physical well-being of humans. Obesity and other chronic lifestyle disorders such as hypertension and diabetes are common across the United States. However, the built environment can act as a factor for developing these diseases or a barrier for improving the health. The design of communities must be changed to support the physical activities such as providing a wide sidewalk, parks with wide open spaces, and other accessible recreation areas. Awareness must be created among the residents about the healthy choices and importance of healthy living. The healthy places can turn into a skilled workforce as both the young and elderly people remain competent.

Principles for building healthy places:

  1. The design of community must be around the needs of individuals
  2. Identifying the economic value
  3. Empowering health champions
  4. Energize shared spaces
  5. List easy and healthy choices
  6. Ensure equitable access
  7. Embrace unique character
  8. Ensure access to healthy food
  9. Make the community more active
