The 12 green principles concern safety for people and the environment; would it be greener to use a bunsen burner or a hot plate?

Solutions

Expert Solution

12 green principles concern safety for people and environment are:

1. Do not waste

2. Atom economy

3. less hazardous synthesis

4. benign chemicals in synthesis

5. benign solvents

6. energy efficiency

7. renewable feedstocks

8. reduce derivatives

9. Use catalysts

10. Chemicals and products should decompose after use

11. Real time analysis to prevent pollution

12. Minimise chances of accidents

When we see at the green principles to compare the bunsen burner and hot plate, hot plate uses more energy and gives less. So, it is less efficient, while the bunsen burner uses natural gas and gives more heat. So, it is more efficient. Bunsen burner is also faster as compared to hot plate. If natural gas is not available, then propane will be used, then it is better to use hot plate. Because the propane gas is costly. So, it depends on the available resources to use the method and decide which is greener.
