A patient arrives at the office for an appointment and you that he has been recently diagnosed with epilepsy. When he arrives for his appointment, he says he’s not feeling quite right and he begins to seize. The front desk immediately gets the medical assistant. What actions should the MA take immediately and why?
The MA will perform the following actions -
1. Clear everything as well as everyone from his surrounding (To
provide privacy)
2. Making him comfortable by loosening his clothes if restrictive,
particularly the neck part. (To avoid suffocation)
3. Be there with the patient during the whole time and record the
seizure time for future assessment. (To make sure he is fine)
4. Getting soft paddings ready like pillows and blanket in case the
patient falls on the floor (To avoid injury during the
seizure)
5. Try to get the patient in a side-lying position closure to the
floor (To prevent bumps or fall)
6. Turn the patient to the side to maintain open airway and assess
breathing.
7. He will try to avoid opening or putting something in the
patient's mouth during a seizure (They looses control over their
muscles and can either result in mouth or jaw injury or they can
push the tongue into the throat and occlude the airway.)
