Role of the Prime Minister of India

The Prime Minister of India is the head of the executive branch of the Government of India. He should be a member of any one house of the Parliament, either Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha.

He acts as an advisor to the President and is the leader of the Council of Ministers. He serves as link between the President and the Council of Ministers. He briefs the President of India on all cabinet decisions and the state of the country. He also briefs the President on all legislative proposals

Ministerial portfolios are allocated by the Prime Minister and he coordinates the different ministries and department, through the Cabinet Secretariat.

The Prime Minister retains certain ministerial portfolios that are not given to other ministers. He is the chief spokesperson in the Parliament. It is his responsibility to announce policy decisions of the government of Inida. He can also intervene in important debates in the Pariliament to clarify his government’s role.

The Prime Minister represents India in foreign relations and is head of Indian delegations abroad.

Powers of the Prime Minister

He is the head of the Government and leader of the council of ministers. Most of the executive decisions are taken by him. He is the leader of the House where he is elected.
