Potassium is one of the important electrolyte necessary for fluid balance .It is important for the appropriate functions of the cells and nerves. Any alterations in this can either cause the blood to retain potassium or eliminate it. Hyperkalemia and hypokalemia both are very dangerous and often very fatal of untreated on time.

Hyperkalemia Hypoklaemia
  • GIT: Nauseous,vomiting
  • Respiratory :dyspnea
  • CVS:Arrythmia ,palpitations ,pain
  • Muscular :weakness, numb, tingling sensation ,paralysis of limbs if in extreme

Treatment

  • Administering potassium binders
  • Diuretics to remove excess potassium through renal system

Nursing interventions

  • Monitor vitals
  • Administer medication as per order
  • Watch for any complications
  • GIT:Constipation,cramps
  • CVS:arrythmia,decreased blood pressure, bradycardia
  • Muscular :cramps,paresthesia
  • General :weakness,skeletal pain
  • CNS:hallucination,sleeping disturbances ,absent reflex
  • Respiratory :failure
  • GUT:Increased urine output ,feeling low

Treatment

  • Administer potassium supplements

Nursing interventions

  • Administer supplements
  • Monitor vitals
  • Assess for complications
  • Encourage potassium in diet orally
  • Monitor the potassium levels after six hours or every morning until normal
  • Monitor neurological status of the patient
