What if the school-aged/early adolescent client with type 1 diabetes states he does not want to wear any medic alert identification at school because he is afraid some of his classmates will make fun of him when he wears it?
How would you respond to the client and what is your rationale for that response?
A school aged or early adolescent with type 1 diabetes face many challenges emotionally or physically while wearing medic alert identification, like discrimination such as not to go to for trips unless accompanied by a parent.
1. To convince them explain the benefits of wearing the medic alert identification like it saves lives, help to avoid unnecessary hospital admission, prevent minor emergency from becoming a major crisis.
2. As kids older , they wanted to be treated like adults, and appreciate being told the truth, therefore explain them in depth about their medical condition and give them opportunity to view the condition as a facet of their life that must be dealt with and not something to be shied away from.
3, for making it look good you can customize the medic alert identification so that it can be wear like a bracelet on wrist. They must remember that wearing such things won't define them who they are focus on knowing that they have beautiful personality inside.
4. Tell them that they are not the only one who is suffering from such condition, many children of there age are also facing such diseases. And they are doing something good for their health.
5. They should be given suggestions like if they take Healthy diet and Regular exercise they can overcome their problem of Diabetes and it is not necessary to wear it then
