TOPIC: SENSORY

1. What are the effects of aging on sensory function?

As the person grows old and ageing sets in, it changes the body and associated senses such as sense of sound, smell, eyesight, touch, etc. As aging progresses the ears function in reduced capacity and results in loss of hearing or partial hearing loss which is called as presbycusis. The sense of smell with aging loses the nerve endings and less mucous is produced which helps in reduced odor sense. Visual impairment or loss of sight such as glaucoma, cataract causes the vision to blur and in some cases partial or full blindness. SO as the aging progress it takes its toll in key sense in the body rendering the elderly more reliant on other members of their family or healthcare staff.

2. What can be done to prevent vision and hearing losses with aging?

s the aging progresses it takes a toll on visual and hearing senses and if not taken care even causes loss of vision and hearing. The changes or loss of senses is due to wear and tear, environmental factor, concomitant health conditions, diseases, etc. To prevent vision loss vision early precautions should be taken which includes avoiding prolonged exposes to direct light, low screen time on electronic devices, lower brightness to be used on appliance, dietary modification which support vision such as foods rich in Vitamin A, etc. In case of hearing loss, avoiding the loud music, sounds, heavy noisy events and occasions to be avoided, frequent hearing, ear cleaning and ear infection check up can help prevent the hearing loss in older adults with aging. By taking medical care and appropriate precautions with aging the vision and hearing loss can be prevented
