19) what is a temperature inversion and why can theses events cause extreme air pollution?
Ans :-) Temperature inversion is a deviation from normal change of atmospheric property with altitude. In simple words, we can say that a reversal of normal behaviour of temperature in troposphere in which a layer of cool air is overlained by layer of warm layer. This is a result of other weather conditions in a area. They occur most often when a warm, less dense air mass move over dense, cold air mass.
There are two type of temperature inversion :-
(i) surface inversion :- that occur near the earth's surface.
(ii) aloft inversion :- that occur above ground.
Temperature inversion has great effect on air pollution because they charge the dynamics of air movement . Whether it is blanket of smog over city or melting of ice packets due to ozone depletion, atmospheric temperature inversion are intricately involved. They influence the scope and intensity of effect of air pollution on temporary localized basis as well as long term and globally.
