In our society the most trusted healthcare professionals are nurses because throughout the continuum of life nurses are always present with patients. Nurses are critical thinkers, teacher, innovators, caregivers and advocates. Their presence 24/7 has transformed lives and they can do so much more than care for individuals. Nursing is an honorable profession, and nurses are the heart and soul of the healthcare system.
Famous nurse in nursing history:
The famous who had historically contributed to the advancement of her nurse profession is MOTHER TERESA. Her birth name is Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, born August 26,1910 in Balkans. At the age of 18 she left home to join the sisters of Loreto in Ireland. She boarded a ship which headed to India and she first landed in Madras( now Chennai) But she moved on to Calcutta( Now Kolkata) because it was poor city than Madras.
Before practicing nurse she was into teaching field. To complete her missionary training process she has been to St. Teresa's school where she taught local students and became Headmistress in the school. These incidents took place during World war and she took her first vow and pledged herself to live in the life of poverty and obedience of God. After that she changed her name to SAINT THERESA.
She used to teach unprivileged kids in Calcutta and slowly she convinced the school authorities and started a home for the dying and sick people. The home gained popularity in streets and the authorities of missionaries used to bring people to their home and provided them an opportunity to lead their final stages of life peacefully and can die in peace. She started asking for donations and the first find she collected was for Leprosy and this is the reason for the formation of Leprosy Day.
She received NOBEL PEACE PRIZE in 1979 for her peace work and for the way she devoted her life to caring for the poor and sick. She opened GIFT OF LOVE a home to care for the people who infected with HIV/AIDS. These are the major social issues and her background made her historically great in nurse profession.
All these contributions made her unique in nurse profession and which greatly influenced many people who are practicing nurse course. she was suffering from Heart and kidney problems at her final stage and she finally died on September 5 1997 in Calcutta at age of 87.
