Needle stick injury is common among healthcare professionals especially person who withdraw blood.The main reason could be carelessness, disturbances and distractions , poor concentration.

It is the responsibility of the leader or the employer to fully act in this situation. The prophylactic treatment has to be taken immediately and rest of the treatment should be free if cost to the employees .Here the Medical assistant should act accordingly by washing hand with soap and water and seek medical help immediately.

The manager has to supervise this and ensure whether proper treatment and follow up are done.

Rule out the cause to prevent it happening to other professionals

Know about the patient details (complete medical and surgical history,infectious disease)to be assessed

Check whether the hospital or healthcare protocol for blood sample collection is followed or not by the medical assistant

Make sure that Bloodborne Exposure Incident Report,Sharps injury report and sharps injury log to be maintained

The manager can arrange for education programs or seminars yo heakth educate the staffs

The steps in investigating an accident in healthcare field are

Report accident as per the health-care policies
Investigate and find the cause of accident
Submit a written report
Plan for corrective actions
