Implicit Bias
Most people carry some implicit bias, defines as "the unconscious or subtle association that individuals make between groups of people and stereotypes about those groups."Under certain conditions, those automatic association can influence behaviour -making people respond in a biased way. even when they are explicitly prejudiced. A significant example of implicit bias is 'racial bias'; which can cause institutions or individuals to act on racial prejudices, even in spite of good intention and nondiscriminatory policies or standards.
GORDON B.MOSKOWITZ, JEFF STONE conducted a study about implicit stereotyping and medical decisions: unconscious stereotype activation in practitioner's thoughts about African Americans.
They investigated whether stereotypes unconsciously influence the thinking and behaviour of physicians, as they have been shown to do in other professional settings, such as among law enforcement personnel and teachers.
findings
they found that physicians are exhibiting implicit stereotyping about their diagnosis. And this suggests that diagnosis and treatment of African American patients may be biased, even in the absence of the practitioner's intent or awareness.
Stereotypes develop because they help make us more efficient professors of information, able to focus on greater amounts of information and to do so more quickly.sometimes it became the enemy of accuracy. It is therefore important to identify the unconscious nature of stereotype activation.
So, they suggest that, that the implications for competency training program.such training will allow medical professionals to attain their goal: to help and serve all people through the unbiased provision of health care.
