Incidence is defined as the number of new cases appeared, which are affected with the disease to the total number of the people who are diagnosed during a given time period. Incidence risk is always calculated during a given time period like per month, per year. It generally gives the value in terms of fraction like (out of 100000 ) how many are at risk of developing disease. Incidence risk can further be classified to calculate specific or particular measures like gender, age e.t.c.
It is different from the prevalence because in prevalence it counts all the cases who are alive till now and are affected it does not gives the data during a given time period like in the question it is given that 500 are already affected with syphilis and 100 are added last year so it adds both the counts and considered as whole. It gives more meaning to the data because it includes all the cases.
So the incidence of syphilis in the population is 100/100000 = 0.001
Here 100 is taken in the numerator because they are the new cases reported during the last year (a given time period) out of 100000 and 500 is neglected because they are not the current cases. They will be used in prevalence.
