1.) Explain the agendas of the Radical Reconstruction and the Presidential Reconstruction.
Radical Republicans longed for full equality and African American integration. The pattern was clearly represented by individuals such as Stevens or Sumner. Not only did they want the abolition of slavery, they advocated for African Americans ' conflict. The Radical Republicans believed that blacks had the same political rights and opportunities that whites have. Many also claimed the Confederate leaders should be prosecuted for their Civil War actions. Leaders such as Pennsylvania The first two years of Congressional Reconstruction saw Southern states rewrite their Constitutions and the Fourteenth Amendment ratification. Congress was clearly in full control. There was one thing standing in the way it was President Johnson himself. Radical politicians used an unprecedented legislative solution to overcome the impediment the impeachment of the President.
For a Presidential pardon, confederate officials and owners of vast taxable property were required to apply individually. Soon several former Confederate leaders returned to power. And some even tried to recover their seniority in Congress. Johnson's Reconstruction vision had proved remarkably mild. There have been very few prosecutions against the Confederate leaders. By 1866, it had granted 7,000 presidential pardons. Brutal beatings have been common among African-Americans. Even powerful whites tried to subjugate freed slaves through harsh laws which became known as black codes.
