Equal opportunity is the idea that people ought to be able to compete on equal terms, or on a “level playing field,” for advantaged offices and positions. It arises from the similar treatment of all people, unhampered by prejudices or preferences. According to this concept, important offices and positions should go to the most qualified and able persons and not based on arbitrary reasons, such as circumstances of birth, upbringing, having well-connected relatives or friends, religion, sex, ethnicity, race, caste, or involuntary personal attributes such as disability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
