Neonatal Diabetes

Etiology:

-Neonatal diabetes is a rare condition occurs 1 in 400,000 infants.

-Consanguineousmarriage , any single gene mutation leading to pancreatic dysgenesis or maturational delay of pancreatic beta cells which is responsible for insulin release.

- Two types transient( resolves in first few months of life) permanent( continue lifelong)

Complications:

- Developmental delays leading to other metabolic and neuromuscular disorders.

- cognitive disorders

- dysplasia

- diabetic ketoacidosis

- Epilepsy

- carrier to next generation

- Deliver low birth weight babies

Nursing Intervention:

- Neonates may be started with insulin therapy , low doses are enough for them . Need to check for blood sugar regularly as increase in small amount of insulin also may lead to fatal effects.

-Assess the daily insuin needs of the neonate

- Assess the daily blood sugar level

- Assess Neonates for hydration status as baby may have polyuria and also hungry most times.

- Close monitoring of temperature, pulse and respiratory rate

- Assess the Nutritional requirement as high calories can be required for neonate. Encourage breast feeding if physician recommends .

- Educate the mother and the family about the care of newborn and regular follow ups.
