Identify priority-nursing interventions in the case of postoperative complications for a patient undergoing an esophagogastrostomy. How do these interventions align with postoperative care given to other surgical patients?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Key nursing interventions for postoperative complications of patient with esophagogastrostomy:

After esophagectomy, Patients are generally kept in the ICU for almost 24 to 48 hours as they may be highly incubated with multiple drains & required tubes. Hence there is requirement of intensive cardiopulmonary monitoring all the time. Further there is need of critical care nursing skills for systematic assessment of these patients.

Following are the major interventions in this case:

  • Need to assess the neurological status all the time as any change in the neurological status is the sign of the post operative complications. It may be characterized by the pupillary changes, decreased responsiveness, weakness, tiredness and agitation.
  • Second and very essential intervention is regarding the pain management as this is the general incidence of the intensive pain after surgery and adequate pain control will lead to successful results of decreased cardiopulmonary complications and ultimately decreased mortality.
  • Then there is need to control chances of getting infection
  • Then proper fluid balance is required to maintain
  • Try to avoid the fluid overload as may create serious pulmonary complications.
  • then it should be supported with GIT care as is closely related
  • then proper care of nasogastric tube is required

At last it is concluded that these interventions align with postoperative care given to other surgical patients as in every case there is need of pain management as the prime requirement of the all surgeries.

Similarly the infection control plans are aligned intervention.

Also the fluid management and avoiding overload of the fluid are the common interventions in each surgical patient.
