What are single case studies and how are they used in research?
Single case study in research is a research design were the subject is his own control rather than using other group or individual. They are mainly used in applied research. There are few requirements such as the behaviour of the individual has to be repeated over intervention.
The effects have to be observed for a long peiod of time to prove to the researcher the final conclusion.Behaviour is assesed repeatedly which allows the researcher to see how the consistency of the treatment changes.
The three phases of the single case studies are reversal, intervention and baseline.Baseline is where the researcher collects the data on the dependant variable without any intervention ,and reversal is where he removes the independant vriable and collects data on dependant variable.Intervention is where the researcher introduces an independant variable and then collects data on dependant variable. In single case studies the decisions are made on data collected.
