Patient Information:
Patient: Sue Li

Ethnicity: Asian American
CULTURAL CONSIDERATION FOR Ms. Li:-
-First one must remember when performing assessments not every
single Asian American will fall into one groups categories as there
are many different cultural practices and beliefs among Asian
communities and subgroups.
-given that Ms. Li is an Asian American and no other information is
provided one will assume she follows traditional values of her
culture.
- Ms. Li may avoid eye contact, which is meant as a sign of
respect, she may or may not be willing to answer questions and
disclose information, given her age the possibility of Ms. Li
answering questions and providing health information is more likely
to be seamless. One would be mindful of respecting her space and
ensure her that any answers will remain private.
- avoid complicated terminology and use language according to her
education level.
-be very careful of any signs and symptoms of possible suicide
ideation and remind her that whatever happened is not her
fault.
-There might also be a tendency to give yes or no replies. It is
best to ask open ended questions.
(b) ABUSE ASSESSMENT SCREEN:-
-Abuse Assessment screen is said to be aimed in detecting abuse
in women who are pregnant.
-The Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) is an assessment tool designed
to screen for domestic violence and abuse during pregnancy by
asking 3 to 5 questions about current emotional, sexual, and
physical abuse before and during pregnancy (WHEC, 2016).
(c) during the assessment if there is abuse suspected or
disclosed, the nurse must take a gentle approach in an open,
nonjudgmental way.
- The nurse must be a good listener and validate the patient’s
decision to speak up about the abuse.
- The nurse must communicate that this type of behavior is
unacceptable and she does not deserve to be treated like that
(Power, 2016).
- The nurse must assure that the patient is immediately in a safe
situation especially if the abuser is nearby.
- The appropriate authorities must be notified so that an
investigation can take place.
- In certain situations, such as a sexual assault or rape, there
may be the need to call in a special team to take over the
investigation.
- The situation then must be documented immediately so that there
are not any important facts accidently left out or forgotten.
