Decide on a null hypothesis and a testable research hypothesis. Then you will be shown some data including some descriptive statistics and an associated probability value. Based on those data, make a decision whether or not to reject the null hypothesis. Make sure you state why you made your decision.
Is there a significant positive relationship between motivation and GPA?
State the NULL HYPOTHESIS
State the ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS
Data were collected and results showed…
The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient found was r = +.65
p = .07
Make your decision
As we are testing here whether there is a significant positive relationship between motivation and GPA, therefore this is a one tailed test for which the null and the alternative hypothesis are given as:
Now as the p-value for the test here is 0.07, we can say that the test is significant at all the level of significance above 0.07 but not for <= 0.07
For example:
For level of significance, = 0.1, as the p-value here is 0.07 < 0.1, therefore the test is significant and we can reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the there is a significant positive relationship between the two variables here.
But For example for level of significance, = 0.05, as the p-value is 0.07 > 0.05, therefore the test is not significant here and we dont have sufficient evidence that there is a significant positive relationship between the variables.
