Gsetational diabetes is a condition in which our blood sugar level become high during the pregnancy , It affects up to 10% of the women who is pregnant in the U.S in every year . gestational diabestes having the two classes , women with class 1 can manage it through diet and excersie and those who have class 2 need to take insulin or other medication ,

Gestational diabetes goes away as after giving the birth . but it can affect the baby 's health and it raises the risk of getting type 2 diabetes later in the life .

Gestational diabetes symptoms ;-

Women with the gestational diabetes usually don't have the symptoms or may chalk them up to pregnancy . most find out that they have it during a routine screening.

The most common symptoms are ;- become thirsteir , hungrier or eat more than usual and go for pee more than usual

Gestational Diabetes causes

When we eat our pancreas release insulin , a hormone that helps move a sugar called glucose from our blood to our cells , which is used for the energy .During the pregnancy , our placenta makes hormones that cause glucose to biuld up in our's blood. Usually , our pancreas can send out enough insulin to handle it . but if our body can't make enough insulin or stops using insulin like it should , our blood sugsr levels rise and we get gestational diabetes .

Gestational Diabetes Test and Diagnosis

Gestational diabetes usually happens in the second half of pregnancy . so , teh doctor will check for it between weeks of 24 and 28 or sooner if we 're at high risk .

Our doctor will give us a glucose challenge or glucose screening test . We 'll drink something sweet to raise our blood sugar . An hour later , we 'll take a blood test to see how our body handelled all that sugar . If teh results show that our blood sugar is higher than a certain level , usually around 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL ) , we 'll need an oral glucose tolerance test . This means that checking our blood sugar after going without food and having a 3 hour glucose test . If we're at high risk but our test result are normal , our doctor might test us again later in the preganacy to make sure that we still don't have it .

The target blood sugar level for women during preganacy

  • Before a meal ;- 95mg/dL or less
  • An hour after a meal ;- 140 mg/dL or less
  • two hours after a meal ;- 120 mg/dL or less

The two conditions in which that may result false positive test are as explianed below ;-

Women with early onset of gestational diabetes during early pregnancy and are followed up without therapeutic intervention and under went the 75 g oral glucose tolerance test again during 24 to 28 weeks of gestation. Those exhibiting the gestational diabetes mellitus patterns on the second 75 g oral glucose tolerance test wre diagnosed with the true gestational diabetes and treated , whereas those exhibhiting the normal patterns were diagnosed with false positive early gestational diabetes mellitus and recieved no therapeutic intervention .

In women with early onset gestational diabetes , fasting plasma glucose levels ,significantly decreased from early preganncy to 24 -28 weeks of gestations where as the1 hour and 2 hour values that remained virtually uncahnged.
