WHAT IS MEANT BY MICROFLORA? Microflora defined as the community of organisms consists of algae, fungi and bacteria that live in one or another living organisms or in a particular habitat. HOW MICROFLORA INFLUENCE OUR HEALTH? There are 5 ways in which the health of the humans can be influenced by microflora. They are a) obesity b) heart disease c) lack of immune system d)brain and e) excessive crying. OBESITY: Gut bacteria helps to influence weight. Several researches suggested that , the people who is obese have less diversity than lean people and also found out that increase in gut bacteria ( Firmicutes) and decrease in group of gut bacteria (Bacteroidetes) are linked together to cause obesity in humans. HEART DISEASE: In certain foods like egg and beef, these gut bacteria produces a compound called trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) increases the risk of heart diseases. Recent study suggests that, an increase of 2.5 times of these compound likely to cause heart diseases, stroke or even die within 3 years of time compared with people with low levels of the compound. IMMUNE SYSTEM: The interaction between gut bacteria and human's own cells plays an important role in the development of a functioned immune system. For instance, a recent study on breast milk and formula confronted that breast milk has more diversity than formula milk. BRAIN: The gut bacteria have high influence on the behavior changes like anxiety and may have an effect on the brain. Recent study on mice suggests that, therapies like probiotics can be used to restore normal gut flora by correcting behavior and mood changes in humans. EXCESSIVE CRYING: Abnormal gut bacteria cause colic( crying for more than 3 hours without a medical reason) or referred as excessive crying had high numbers of gut bacteria from a group called Proteobacteria than babies with no colic. These bacteria produce gas which causes pain which results in abnormal crying for hours and disappear within months after birth. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY MICROFLORA IN HUMAN BODY? To maintain a healthy microflora one have to be follow these key steps.They includes a) eat a complex carbohydrate die and low fat diet contains fruits and vegetables b) limit the consumption of animal foods c) reduce the consumption of sugar d) increase the intake of pre-biotic ( asparagus, onions and garlic) and probiotic ( yogurt and other diary products) foods e) maintain a daily bowel movement by increasing the intake of fiber foods like banana f) reduce the intake of sulfate containing products like salads, dried fruits, shellfish, alcohols and packaged fruit juices.
