Mrs. Matthews is a 63-year-old patient who has been admitted for CVA with left-sided hemiparesis. She has a history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The doctor informs her family she had an ischemic stroke and he doesn’t know how much function of her left side she’ll regain and then gets called to another emergency and leaves you with the family.
What labs and additional tests would you expect to have ordered? Would they be high or low?
Tests:
CT scan, MRI scan can produce 3-dimensional images of your head.
carotid doppler shows the picture of carotid arteris in the neck
and its blood supply to the brain. it identifies if the carotid
artery narrowed by arteriosclerosis. Transcranial doppler measures
the blood flow in batteries in the brain. MRA scan evaluate blood
vessels in your brain. cerebral aretrogram shows abnormality of the
blood vessels. Routine screening tests like X ray chest,
urinalysis, pulse oximetry, ECHO, ECG to evaluate the heart
function. EEG to find brain waves with several electrical leads,
lumbar puncture find subarachnoid hemorrhage and infection in the
nervous system or inflammation. EMG records the electrical activity
of nerves and muscles, brain biopsy find out the lesion and tumors
in the brain. CBC find the RBC, WBC and platlet count. Coagulation
test find the blood clot timing. it find the hemarrgae or clotting.
if the patient is on heparin PTT and PT test determine the correct
dose. Blood chemistry test evaluate glucose, serum electrolytes
etc.blood lipid test find the high risk of heart disease and
stroke. Other test like antinuclear antibody(ANA), blood culture,
coagulation factors, ESR, hemoglobin electrophoresis, homocysteine,
VDRL, FTA and toxicology screen. these test for specific stroke
situation, abnormal results of this causes a stroke.
