Nurse burnout is a physical, mental, and emotional state caused by chronic overwork and a sustained lack of job fulfillment and support. Common burnout symptoms may include physical or emotional exhaustion, and a low sense of personal accomplishment.
Burnout syndrome is detected in professionals from various areas, prevalence is particularly high in service and care workers, especially health and care ones. Nurses experience constant stressful labor situations, working in direct contact with patients who have different expectations and degrees of suffering.
The prevalence for Burnout syndrome is higher specially among women, single and childless.International studies have shown the prevalence of burnout ranged from 10% to 70%.
An overall pooled-prevalence of burnout symptoms among global nurses was 11.23%. Significant differences were noted between geographical regions, specialties and type of burnout measurement used. Sub-Saharan African region had the highest burnout symptoms prevalence rate while Europe and Central Asia region had the lowest. Paediatric nurses had the highest burnout symptoms prevalence rates among all specialties while Geriatric care nurses had the lowest.
