Did Japan turn into a totalitarian regime? Please explain why this is complicated.
Thanks
Similar to Italy, Germany and some other European Countries,
hyoernationalism and aggressive expansionism began to rise in Japan
during the 1930s. The japan reached to a political totalitarianism,
hypernationalism and fascism in to its climax in its invasion of
China in 1937.
The beginning of totalitarianism is well connected with the treaty
of Versailles which disagreed to recognise the territorial claim of
japan and this steam up to the ultranationalism among the Japanese
people.
Eventhough there was many nationalistic ideology arise among the
far right wing group during the 1920s. These ideologies were not
supported by government until these gained assist from the ruling
government in 1930s.
The awakening of the 1930s itself was to the prominence of this
ideology among the Japanese. Some portion of the Manchurian
railroad was bombed by the some radical army officers in 1931 and
falsely choke up the attack to the Chinese occupied Manchria. This
was the beginning of the state towards the totalitarianism in an
open way. During this time more than 30,000 left wing political
dissenters were arrested.
In 1932 the The Prime Minister of Janpan was assassinated by the
right wing army and navy officers and this strengthen the
militarism in Japan and weakened the democracy and rule of law in
Japan.
After these incidents, later in 1933 japan withdraw from League of
Nations over the international criticism of Japan. The Japan's
withdrawal from the League of Nations leads to the political
isolation and it burned the hypernationalism, and expansionist
theories.
These totalitarianism era in Japan was quite complicated because of
many reasons. The country was faced many problems such great
depression of 1930s, the militarism which lead to the killing the
Prime Minister and the international criticism and isolation of the
State and etc. marked the era really complicated in the political
history of Japan.
