Why is AIDS treatment often done with a cocktail of drugs?
AIDS is acronymn for Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is caused by a virus called HIV virus which is acronymn for Human immunodeficieny virus. The disease alters the immune system, making people much more vulnerable to infections and diseases. HIV is found throughout all the tissues of the body but is transmitted via the body fluids of an infected person (semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk).
A cocktail of antiretroviral drugs are given against AIDS. A variety of antiretroviral drug therapies are currently available by prescription because AIDS has a broad spectrum of infection. It can affect any organ or tissue of the body. So, combination drugs may prevent the outburst of this infection in main organs of the body. Each drug included in the combination therapy serves a unique purpose. The combination of drugs works to prevent the virus from replicating, and in many cases, can restore the patient’s CD4 and T-cell counts, thereby improving the quality and longevity of life.
