One of the greatest disadvantage of gas turbine power plants is its lower turbine efficiency therefore cannot be utilised for commercial production of electricity instead it is normally used to supply standby/auxiliary to other conventional power plants such as hydro electric power station.
Further hydro-electric power plants are genrally used as base load power plants but during peak load hours the stand by power plant must be coupled to compensate for peak load. Therefore use of storage-type standby electric power plants is advantageous. Such plants can store energy at night time, when power consumption is low, and thereby create a load for the base-load steam-turbine power plants In daytime, the stored energy is used to cover peak loads. Such standby electric power plants are exemplified by gas-turbine plants. In the (GTPP) air is pumped and compressed during the night and is stored in airtight spaces, for example, in underground chambers.and during peak load time they are Stwiched on to meat the increasing demand.this will surely result in optimum increasing functioning of hydroelectric power plants.
